Roger Federer is in the semifinals of the Cincinnati Masters after he played his first full match of the tournament in dispatching Nikolay Davydenko in straight sets in the quarters. Federer now draws Marcos Baghdatis, a player well outside of the top 10 but one that is definitely playing strong tennis.
Baghdatis was a non-factor in Toronto however he was playing well in Washington the week before. Perhaps entering ATP Toronto on little rest hurt his chances there but the Cypriot has been back to form in Cincinnati. Baghdatis, in the Cincy draw, has victories over Marin Cilic, Thomaz Bellucci, Tomas Berdych, and top ranked Rafael Nadal - an impressive quartet without a weak player.
If you keep winning your hard court matches on the ATP tour then eventually you are going to bump into Andy Murray or Roger Federer and in this case, Baghdatis has Fed who should be very energetic even this late in the tournament. Federer is coming off of a straight sets win over Davydenko, a walk-over, a victory via retirement, and a bye - there isn't anything there that would be take any steam out of the world number 2 and Federer will capitalize.
Baghdatis, as everyone will be quick to point out, beat Federer in their last match back at Indian Wells earlier this year. It was the only time Baghdatis has been able to beat Federer in their careers and the match at Indian Wells was hardly one-sided with Baghdatis winning 7-4 in a third set tiebreaker.
Federer has come in priced at -275 (4/11) with SportingBet to beat Baghdatis in the semifinals and maybe those odds would be true odds if Federer wasn't so fresh and Baghdatis wasn't so spent having played several tough matches compared to Fed's cakewalk draw. But as they are -275 on Federer has great value and they should be taken by value bettors as really Federer might be a -700 (1/7) favorite in this match, maybe much shorter.
Take Federer at -275 and for those looking for odds closer to EVEN - take the Swiss Maestro at -111 (10/11) to win in straight sets (SportingBet).
