Elena Dementieva defends her title at the Rogers Cup this week.
Dementieva will be hoping to find some form after an inauspicious start to the hard court season with a series of early defeats. The Russian won the US Open Series last year but it's proving to be a far from fruitful period this time round.
Cincinnati finalists Kim Clijsters and Maria Sharapova look like the players in form at the moment. Sharapova has been racking up the wins over the past few weeks, scoring a number of wins over top ten players and she will be a serious threat at the US Open later this month.
Clijsters would probably be seeded higher than sixth if she chose to compete more regularly on the tour but she looked a class act in the States and this is her favourite period of the year.
Svetlana Kuznetsova is seeded eleventh this week but the San Diego champion has a horrible first round draw against Cincinnati semi-finalist Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. The winner of this match is likely to face Agnieszka Radwanska in the third round and all of these three players are capable of going on to reach the final.
Top seed Jelena Jankovic is in terrible form at the moment and it is hard to see that changing while second seed Caroline Wozniacki is likely to do better this week after having some more time to get used to the hard courts.
